Yedigöller National Park Free Camping Guide 2026 - How to Get There & What to Do

As one of Turkey's greatest natural treasures, Yedigöller National Park attracts thousands of nature lovers every season. This unique national park, world-renowned especially in the autumn months, is one of the most beautiful places where you can camp for free. The seven lakes, formed by water seeping from beneath the rocks, offer an unforgettable camping experience amidst lush beech and oak forests.

In this guide, I will share in detail how to camp for free in Yedigöller, which spots are the most ideal, and where you can explore. Whether you are an experienced camper or pitching a tent for the first time, this information will help you have a safe and enjoyable nature camp.

Where is Yedigöller National Park?

Yedigöller National Park is located within the borders of the Mengen district in the Bolu province. Situated in the inner parts of the Western Black Sea Region, this magnificent area is positioned about 50 kilometers inland from the sea. Being relatively close to major cities like Ankara, Istanbul, and Bursa makes it an ideal destination for weekend getaways.

Location and GPS Coordinates

The GPS coordinates of Yedigöller National Park are approximately 40.9333° North, 31.7333° East. The park entrance is 43 kilometers away from the Mengen district center. Simply typing "Yedigöller National Park" into your navigation device will suffice, but you might have trouble finding your way, especially after dark, so I highly recommend planning to arrive during daylight.

The park covers a total area of 2,019 hectares and sits at an altitude of 900-1,400 meters above sea level. Due to this elevation, expect the weather to be quite chilly, particularly in the evenings and early mornings.

Getting There by Private Car

The drive from Istanbul to Yedigöller takes about 3 to 3.5 hours. You need to head towards Bolu on the TEM Highway, take the Mengen exit, and then follow the D100 highway. After Mengen, signs pointing to Yedigöller will guide you all the way to the park entrance.

For those coming from Ankara, the distance is about 220 kilometers, taking around 3 hours. You can reach Mengen via the Ankara-Bolu highway and follow the Yedigöller signs from there.

There is an asphalt road all the way to the park entrance, but the last 15 kilometers are quite winding and steep. You need to drive carefully, especially in rainy weather. Keep in mind that the road might be closed due to snow during the winter months.

A vehicle entrance fee is charged at the park gate. You can check the current fee schedule for 2026 on the official website of the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks.

Getting There by Public Transport

Reaching Yedigöller by public transport can be a bit more challenging, but it's not impossible. From Istanbul, you first need to take a bus to Bolu or Mengen. Many bus companies operate routes from the Istanbul Bus Terminal to Bolu.

Once you arrive in Bolu or Mengen, finding a minibus (dolmuş) to the park entrance is quite difficult. The best option is to use a taxi or a private transfer service from Mengen. Local taxi companies are usually very helpful to tourists in this regard.

Alternatively, you can join daily tours organized from Mengen, especially on weekends, to get to Yedigöller and pitch your tent in the evening. However, it's crucial to plan your return trip in advance.

Camping Area Features and Facilities

Yedigöller National Park offers free camping in designated areas. Since pitching a tent randomly within the park is prohibited, you must stay in the areas directed by the park staff.

Free Camping Spots

The park management has allocated specific zones as camping areas in line with environmental protection principles. The most popular camping spots are:

1. Lakeside Camping Area: Located by Büyükgöl (Big Lake), this is the most preferred and fastest-filling area. If you want to wake up to a lake view in the early morning, I recommend arriving on Friday evening or early Saturday morning. The area is flat and grassy, with a capacity of about 50-60 tents.

2. Forest Camping Area: Nestled among beech trees, this area offers a shadier and cooler camping experience. It's especially preferable during the summer months. Although the ground is slightly more uneven, it is ideal for those who want to be fully immersed in nature.

3. Near the Picnic Area: Located close to the park entrance, this zone provides easier access to amenities like toilets and water fountains. It is suitable for families and first-time campers.

To secure a spot in the camping areas, especially during October and November (the autumn foliage season), you may need to arrive on a weekday or get there very early on the weekend. The park management may occasionally prohibit camping due to full capacity.

Water and Toilet Facilities

You can access clean drinking water from the fountains inside Yedigöller. Located at several different points, these fountains provide natural spring water that is safe to drink. However, bringing your own water jug will be practical, especially so you don't have to walk to the fountain at night.

The park is quite well-equipped when it comes to toilet facilities. There are WC cabins near the picnic areas. These toilets are cleaned daily, but hygiene issues can arise during peak seasons due to heavy use. Therefore, I recommend bringing your own wet wipes and hand sanitizer.

Sinks and hand-washing facilities are also available. However, don't expect hot water; since all the water comes from natural springs, it is quite cold.

Fire Rules

Due to the risk of forest fires, lighting open fires is strictly prohibited in Yedigöller National Park. This rule is enforced very strictly, and violators face serious penalties.

You can use a barbecue or a camping stove for cooking, but you must do so in designated picnic areas and elevated off the ground in metal grills. Absolutely do not light a fire in front of your tent or inside the forest.

There are fixed barbecue spots in certain areas of the park. You can use these to cook safely. You need to bring your own charcoal, as there are no sales points inside the park.

Make sure to keep a fire extinguisher or at least a large jug of water with you. Do not leave the area until you are certain the grill you used has completely cooled down.

Is There Cell Phone Reception?

There is good news regarding cell phone signals in Yedigöller National Park. Turkcell and Vodafone operators generally have good reception around the park entrance and lakeside areas. Türk Telekom is a bit weaker but still usable.

However, the signal can weaken or drop completely in the forest camping areas or on hiking trails. There is a telephone in the park management building for emergencies.

Internet speed is at 3G-4G levels, sufficient for social media use and messaging. However, it is not ideal for watching videos or downloading large files.

Best Camping Season and Weather

Yedigöller is one of those rare places that offers different beauties in all four seasons. However, the most ideal times for camping fall into specific seasons.

Seasonal Recommendations

Spring (April-May-June): In the spring months, Yedigöller is enchanting with its lush green cover. With the snow melting in April, the lakes overflow with water, and the waterfalls flow at their strongest. May and June are ideal due to the mild weather, abundant greenery, and the fact that the peak crowds haven't arrived yet. During this period, the flora comes alive, increasing your chances of observing forest wildlife.

Night temperatures can range between 5-10 degrees Celsius, so a thick sleeping bag is a must. Daytime temperatures are a comfortable 15-22 degrees.

Summer (July-August): The summer months are the busiest time for Yedigöller. The park is practically overflowing, especially in August. However, the cool forest air is appealing to those looking to escape the hot summer days. Night temperatures hover around 12-15 degrees, while daytime temperatures are around 20-25 degrees.

Early reservation is essential during this period, otherwise you might not find a camping spot.

Autumn (September-October-November): Autumn is the season when Yedigöller gains its worldwide fame. In October and November, the beech trees turning into shades of yellow, orange, and red offer a visual feast. It is a paradise for photography enthusiasts.

However, this period is also very crowded. It is almost impossible to find a spot from mid-October to early November. If you choose this season, I recommend coming on a weekday or opting for late September to early October.

The weather gets chilly, and night temperatures can drop to 0-5 degrees. You must take precautions against freezing.

Winter (December-January-February-March): Yedigöller takes on a completely different kind of beauty in the winter months. Under the snow, it practically turns into a fairytale land. However, camping during this period is quite challenging. Roads can be closed, and park entry may be restricted.

If you want to experience winter camping, you must go with a 4-season tent, a sub-zero sleeping bag, and snow gear. It is critically important to get information from the park management beforehand.

Temperature and Precipitation Information

The annual average temperature in Yedigöller is around 10 degrees Celsius. Due to its high elevation above sea level, it is 5-7 degrees cooler than the surrounding regions.

Annual precipitation ranges between 800-1,000 mm, with rainfall mostly concentrated in the spring and autumn months. Although the summer months are relatively dry, sudden downpours can occur.

Be sure to check the weather forecast before you go. Since the probability of rain is high, especially in autumn and spring, a waterproof tent and raincoat are essential.

Fog is also a common weather phenomenon. Especially in the early morning hours, the lakes are covered with a layer of fog, creating mesmerizing landscapes. However, you should be careful when hiking in foggy weather.

Nearby Attractions and Activities

Yedigöller offers great opportunities not only for camping but also for active nature activities.

Hiking Trails

There are many marked hiking trails within the park. The most popular routes are:

1. Seven Lakes Tour (5 km, 2-3 hours): The most classic route. Starting from Büyükgöl, it visits İncegöl, Deringöl, Seringöl, Nazlıgöl, Küçükgöl, and Sazlıgöl respectively. It is a moderately difficult trail, suitable for families. There are wooden bridges, resting spots, and photography platforms along the way.

2. Waterfall Route (3 km, 1.5 hours): A trail starting from Büyükgöl and leading to the waterfalls within the park. It is more impressive in the spring months when the waterfalls are flowing at their strongest.

3. Plateau Trail (8 km, 4 hours): For more experienced hikers. This route goes beyond the park borders to reach nearby plateaus, offering panoramic views. I recommend doing this with a guide.

4. Ornithology Route (4 km, 2 hours): A trail designed for bird watchers. Numerous bird species can be observed, especially during the spring migration period.

Pay attention to the markers on all hiking trails and do not stray from the path. Keep enough water, snacks, and a first aid kit with you.

Water Activities

Swimming is prohibited in Yedigöller. Since the lakes are natural protected areas, no water activities are allowed. However, you can dip your feet in by the lake shore and enjoy the cool waters.

Fishing is also forbidden. All living creatures within the park are under protection.

The best water activity will be sitting by the lake, listening to the sounds of nature, and bird watching. The reflections on the water surface, especially in the morning and evening hours, offer fantastic shots for photography enthusiasts.

Camping Equipment Recommendations

Choosing the right equipment is crucial for a comfortable and safe camping experience in Yedigöller.

Must-Bring Items

Tent: The weather in Yedigöller can be unpredictable. A waterproof, wind-resistant tent is a must. A 3-season tent is the minimum requirement, while a 4-season tent is preferable for autumn and spring.

Sleeping Bag: Night temperatures vary between 0-15 degrees depending on the season. Bring a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of at least 0 degrees. A sleeping bag with a -5 degree comfort rating is ideal for autumn camping.

Sleeping Pad: Use a thick insulation pad or an inflatable mat to prevent the cold coming from the ground. The ground can be very cold, especially in the autumn and spring months.

Camping Stove and Gas: Since open fires are prohibited in the park, a camping stove is essential for cooking. Bring spare gas cartridges, as there are no sales points inside the park.

Lighting: A headlamp and a flashlight are absolute musts. Since there is no electricity in the park, strong battery-powered or rechargeable lights are necessary. Keep a power bank with you as well.

Water Jug: A water jug with at least a 10-liter capacity. Store enough water so you don't have to go to the fountain at night.

Raincoat and Waterproof Clothing: Be prepared for sudden rains. Definitely bring spare clothes as well.

Thermos: A thermos will come in very handy for hot tea or coffee in the morning.

Region-Specific Recommendations

Due to Yedigöller's unique characteristics, some additional equipment will be useful:

Photography Equipment: A high-quality camera or smartphone camera is a must to immortalize the autumn colors. If you use a tripod, you can capture wonderful shots in the morning fog and evening light.

Binoculars: Binoculars are very useful for bird and wildlife watching. You can observe animals like deer and roe deer from a distance.

Trekking Shoes: Opt for slip-resistant, waterproof trekking shoes to use on the hiking trails. The ground can be slippery.

Backpack: A 20-30 liter backpack is ideal for daily hikes. You can pack water, snacks, a raincoat, and first aid supplies inside.

Matches or Lighter: A backup ignition tool for your camping stove.

Trash Bags: Collect your trash and take it with you to avoid harming nature. There are dumpsters at the park exit.

Safety Tips and Rules

Wildlife Warnings

Yedigöller National Park has rich biodiversity. Mammals such as deer, roe deer, wild boars, foxes, martens, and badgers live within the park. There are also numerous bird species.

Bear Warning: Although rare, brown bears can be spotted in the area. Store your food outside your tent in bear-resistant containers or inside your car. Avoid making noise at night and do not go into the forest alone in the dark.

If you encounter a bear, stay calm, avoid direct eye contact, and slowly back away. Do not run or shout.

Snake Warning: There are some snake species in the park. Be careful, especially among rocks or in bushes. Walk with heavy steps so that snakes move away.

Insects and Ticks: There is a risk of ticks in the forest. Wear long sleeves and tuck your pant legs into your socks. Check your body after camping.

Use insect repellent to protect yourself from mosquitoes and other bugs.
