Erikli Plateau Free Camping Guide 2026: How to Get There & What to Do

As Yalova's hidden natural paradise, Erikli Plateau offers camping enthusiasts a peaceful and refreshing escape. Located just 2 hours from Istanbul, this enchanting plateau is an ideal destination for weekend getaways with its lush green forests, crystal-clear waterfalls, and thermal springs.

Nestled in the foothills of the Samanlı Mountains at an altitude of approximately 600-900 meters above sea level, Erikli Plateau offers both cool highland air and the advantage of being close to Istanbul. This hidden gem of Thermal Yalova is a perfect choice for those seeking a camping experience intertwined with nature, far from the crowds.

In this guide, I will share in detail how you can camp for free at Erikli Plateau, the best camping spots, nearby attractions, and all the practical information you need to know. Equally suitable for families, couples, and groups of friends, this plateau will leave you with unforgettable memories with the right equipment and planning.

Where is Erikli Plateau?

Erikli Plateau is located on the western slopes of the Samanlı Mountains, within the borders of the Termal district of Yalova province. As one of the most accessible plateaus in the Marmara Region, Erikli has become a popular nature escape for locals thanks to its close proximity to both Istanbul and Bursa.

Location and GPS Coordinates

The GPS coordinates of Erikli Plateau are approximately 40.5833° North, 29.1333° East. The plateau is located about 25 kilometers from Yalova city center and 15 kilometers from the Termal district center.

The plateau area is spread over a wide plain and includes several different camping spots. While the main plateau settlement is at an altitude of 600-700 meters, the upper sections reach up to 900 meters. This elevation difference provides weather that is 5-8 degrees cooler than the cities below.

Simply typing "Erikli Yaylası, Yalova" or just "Erikli Köyü" into your navigation device is enough. The road signs are also quite clear, so the risk of getting lost is low.

Getting There by Private Car

There are two main routes to reach Erikli Plateau from Istanbul:

1. By Road (Gebze - Izmit): You can reach Yalova via Gebze on the TEM Highway. However, this route is quite long (about 180 km, 3 hours) and you may encounter heavy traffic, especially on weekends.

2. By Sea (Ferry - Recommended): Taking a ferry from Istanbul to Yalova is both faster and more enjoyable. There are regular ferry services to Yalova from Istanbul's Yenikapı or Pendik piers. The journey takes about 1 hour and is very comfortable.

You can buy ferry tickets, including for your vehicle, online or at the pier. It is highly recommended to go early or make a reservation, especially on weekend mornings.

Once you reach Yalova, follow the Yalova-Termal road. After Termal, you will see the signs for Erikli Plateau. It's about a 30-40 minute drive from Yalova center to Erikli.

For those coming from Bursa, the distance is about 60 km; you can reach Yalova via Gemlik and follow the same route.

There is an asphalt road from Yalova city center all the way to Erikli. The last 5 kilometers are a bit narrow and winding but generally in good condition. You can easily reach it with a standard passenger car; a 4x4 is not necessary.

Getting There by Public Transport

Reaching Erikli Plateau by public transport is possible but requires a bit of planning.

From Istanbul, you must first reach Yalova by ferry. Yenikapı-Yalova or Pendik-Yalova ferry services run frequently, especially on weekends. The ferry offers a comfortable journey that takes about 1 hour.

From the Yalova pier, you can reach the city center by minibus (dolmuş) or public bus (10-15 minutes).

There are direct minibus services from Yalova center to Erikli Plateau, but they are not very frequent. The number of services increases especially on weekends and during the summer months. You can take the minibuses going via Termal, get off at the Erikli road junction, and walk to the village from there (about 3 km) or take a taxi.

Alternatively, taking a private taxi or transfer service from Yalova center to Erikli is more comfortable. Local taxi companies are experienced in this route and very helpful.

The same options apply for the return trip. However, finding a minibus in the evening can be difficult, so it's recommended to have a taxi number handy or make a reservation.

Campsite Features and Facilities

With its natural and pristine environment, Erikli Plateau offers fantastic opportunities for camping. You can camp for free in designated areas.

Free Camping Spots

There are several different camping areas in Erikli Plateau:

1. Main Plateau Meadows: The wide meadows located just above Erikli Village are the most popular camping area. Featuring flat ground, grass cover, and surrounded by pine forests, this area has a capacity of about 70-80 tents.

You can start your day waking up to mountain views and birdsong. The area is quite spacious, offering enough distance for families and groups to camp side by side comfortably.

Its proximity to the village provides convenience for needs like water and groceries. However, it can get a bit crowded on weekends.

2. Near Sudüşen Waterfall: You can also camp in the forested area near Erikli's famous Sudüşen Waterfall. This region is shadier, cooler, and offers a more immersive nature experience.

Falling asleep to the sound of the waterfall is a very special experience. However, the ground can be a bit uneven and rocky, so a thick sleeping pad is a must. It has a capacity of about 30-40 tents.

3. High Section (800-900 meters): For those seeking more adventure, you can hike up to the higher sections of the plateau and camp with a panoramic view. Reaching this area requires a light climb (about a 1-hour hike).

The view of the Gulf of Izmit and Yalova city from here is magnificent. The stars are very clear at night. However, the wind can be a bit stronger, so you must secure your tent well.

4. Forest Edge Campsites: You can also set up camp in semi-shaded areas along the edges of the pine and beech forests surrounding the plateau. This area is highly preferred in the summer because you can find shade during the midday heat.

In all camping areas, you should take care to collect your trash and avoid harming nature. Instead of pitching your tent randomly, setting it up on flattened areas used by previous campers is both more comfortable for you and less damaging to the environment.

Water and Toilet Facilities

Accessing clean drinking water at Erikli Plateau is relatively easy. There are a few fountains in the village, and the water they provide is spring water quality, safe to drink. Additionally, there are small water sources at several points in the plateau meadows.

The water from Sudüşen Waterfall is also drinkable, but it can get murky, especially in rainy weather. Using water purification tablets will give you peace of mind.

Bringing a 10-20 liter water jug to carry water to your campsite will be practical. This way, you won't have to go to the fountain at night.

Toilet facilities at Erikli are limited. There is a public toilet in the village center, but it's a bit far from the camping areas (about 1 km). Also, cleanliness standards can vary, especially during the summer months.

Near Sudüşen Waterfall, there is a basic WC open during the summer season, but it is closed off-season.

Therefore, to answer the call of nature, you may need to bring a small shovel to dig a cathole and then fill it back in with soil. You should also bury your toilet paper. Do not use wet wipes, as they take years to decompose in nature.

Alternatively, bringing a portable camping toilet eliminates this problem and provides a more comfortable experience.

Campfire Rules

Since Erikli Plateau is a forested area, you must be careful about lighting fires. Never light a fire in the open, especially on dry grass and leaves.

To have a barbecue or campfire, make sure to create a safe area surrounded by stones or dirt. You can find stone fire rings prepared by previous campers in the plateau meadows; you can use these.

Never leave your fire unattended. Avoid making a fire, especially in windy weather, as sparks can cause a forest fire.

The safest method for cooking is using a camping stove. Gas cartridge stoves are both practical and environmentally friendly.

Once your fire or barbecue has completely cooled down, put the ashes in a bag and throw them away as trash, or bury them in the soil and cover them up. Never leave them to the wind.

The risk of forest fires is at its highest in July and August. If possible, do not make open fires during this period; use only a camping stove.

Is There Cell Phone Reception?

Cell phone reception at Erikli Plateau is generally good. Turkcell and Vodafone operators provide 4G signal in the main plateau meadows and the village center. Türk Telekom is a bit weaker but sufficient for calls and messaging.

However, the signal can weaken in forested areas and higher sections. The signal drops completely at some points near Sudüşen Waterfall.

Internet speed is sufficient for social media use, messaging, and emails. It is not ideal for watching videos or downloading large files.

For emergencies, landlines are available at the Erikli Village headman's office and in some houses.

Best Camping Season and Weather

Due to its elevation, Erikli Plateau has a cooler and more comfortable climate compared to the cities below. However, certain seasons are more ideal for camping.

Seasonal Recommendations

Spring (April-May-June): Spring is wonderful for Erikli. In April and May, the plateau is lush green, flowers are blooming, and Sudüşen Waterfall is at its strongest flow. The weather is mild, around 18-24 degrees Celsius during the day and 8-12 degrees at night.

Late May and June are ideal for plateau camping. The weather warms up but isn't sweltering; nights are cool but not too cold. Nature is vibrant, and birdsong is abundant.

There is a possibility of rain during this period. April and May can be particularly rainy, so waterproof gear is a must.

Summer (July-August): Demand for Erikli increases significantly during the summer months. Erikli's cool highland air is especially appealing to those escaping Istanbul's sweltering heat. Daytime temperatures are 25-30 degrees, and nights are 15-18 degrees, making it very comfortable.

This is the most crowded season. On weekends, the plateau meadows are almost completely full. You may need to arrive early to grab a spot.

Rainfall is low in summer, and sunny days are plentiful. However, finding shade during the midday heat is important; under the pine trees is ideal.

Autumn (September-October-November): Autumn is very special for Erikli. In September, the weather is still warm, and the crowds thin out. In October and November, the plateau takes on autumn colors, with beech trees turning shades of yellow and orange.

October is ideal for photography enthusiasts. Morning mist covers the plateau meadows, creating enchanting landscapes when combined with the sunlight.

The weather cools down, and night temperatures can drop to between 5-10 degrees. A thick sleeping bag is essential. The first frosts can begin in November.

The likelihood of rain increases. October and November can be rainy, so a waterproof tent and raincoat are necessary.

Winter (December-January-February-March): Erikli is quiet and secluded in the winter months. When it snows, the plateau turns into a fairytale land. However, camping is quite challenging.

Snow depth can reach 20-50 cm in January and February. The road sometimes closes, making transportation difficult.

Night temperatures range from -5 to +5 degrees. Even during the day, it can stay below freezing.

Winter camping is only for experienced campers. A four-season tent, sub-zero sleeping bag, and snow gear are mandatory. You must also constantly monitor the weather forecast and cancel your camping plans if there's a storm.

Temperature and Precipitation Information

The annual average temperature at Erikli Plateau is around 12-13 degrees Celsius. Due to its elevation, it is 5-7 degrees cooler than Yalova city center.

The annual precipitation is 700-800 mm, which is above the Marmara Region average. Rainfall is especially concentrated in the spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November) months.

The driest months are July and August, but occasional downpours can still occur. Short showers can be seen, especially in the afternoons.

The wind is generally light to moderate. However, strong winds can sometimes blow, especially in the higher sections. It's important to secure your tent well.

Humidity levels are around 60-70% in the summer, which is comfortable. Fog is frequently seen in the winter months.

Nearby Attractions and Activities

Erikli Plateau offers great opportunities not only for camping but also for active nature activities and exploration.

Hiking Trails

There are several beautiful hiking trails around Erikli:

1. Sudüşen Waterfall Hike (2 km, 45 minutes): An easy trail stretching from the plateau meadows to Sudüşen Waterfall. The path through the forest offers a pleasant walk among beech and pine trees.

The waterfall is about 15 meters high and is quite impressive, especially in the spring months. You can dip your feet in the waterfall pool and cool off. However, the water is cold for swimming, and the depth can be dangerous.

The trail is suitable for families and children. The ground can be a bit slippery, so opt for shoes with non-slip soles.

2. Erikli-Delmece Plateau Trail (8 km, 3 hours): A longer hike. Starting from Erikli and extending to the neighboring Delmece Plateau, this trail is of moderate difficulty. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic mountain views, forest paths, and wildlife observation.

There are also camping areas in Delmece, making it an alternative accommodation spot. However, you need to hike the same path back for the return, or you can use the road descending from Delmece to Yalova.

3. Samanlı Mountains Summit Climb (12 km, 5-6 hours): For experienced hikers. A challenging route climbing from Erikli to the summits of the Samanlı Mountains (1000-1200 meters). It is recommended to do this with a guide.

From the summit, you can see the Gulf of Izmit, Istanbul, Yalova, and even Uludağ on clear days. The panoramic view is spectacular.

4. Surrounding Villages Culture Trail (10 km, 3 hours): A route starting from Erikli Village and touring the surrounding traditional villages (Soğucak, Kocadere). You can get to know rural life, traditional Turkish village architecture, and local culture.

You can buy local products (cheese, yogurt, honey) in the villages and chat while drinking tea at the local coffeehouses.

Water Activities

There are no direct water activities at Erikli Plateau, but there are a few options nearby:

Thermal Springs: Yalova Thermal Springs are located just 15 km from Erikli. Relaxing in the thermal waters before or after camping is a wonderful experience. The historical Atatürk Pavilion and Valide Bath are worth visiting.

The temperature of the thermal water is 55-65 degrees, which is good for muscle pain and rheumatism.

Çınarcık Beaches: The coastal town of Çınarcık is 30 km from Erikli. You can swim and enjoy the sea on the clean beaches of the Sea of Marmara.

It's a great option for those who want to combine camping with the sea, especially in the summer months.

Dipsiz Lake (Bottomless Lake): A small lake in the forest between Yalova and Orhangazi. It is 20 km from Erikli. You can picnic by the lake and take photos. Swimming is prohibited.

Camping Equipment Recommendations

Due to Erikli Plateau's highland climate and variable weather, choosing the right equipment is important.

Must-Bring Items

Three-Season Tent: A waterproof, wind-resistant three-season tent is sufficient for Erikli (excluding winter camping). A rainfly is an absolute must against the possibility of rain and wind.

Tent pegs should be sturdy because the plateau soil can sometimes be hard. Bringing spare pegs is a good idea.

Warm Sleeping Bag: Night temperatures vary between 5-18 degrees depending on the season. Get a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of at least 5 degrees. A 0-degree comfort rating might be preferred for autumn and spring.

Sleeping Pad: A thick sleeping pad or inflatable mat is essential to prevent cold from the ground. The ground gets very cold, especially on autumn nights.

Camping Stove and Gas Cartridge: A gas cartridge camping stove is the most practical option for cooking. Bring spare cartridges, as there are no sales points in Erikli.

Lighting: Headlamp and flashlight. Plateau nights get dark, and there is no electricity. Flashlights rechargeable with a power bank provide long usage.

Water Jug: A 10-20 liter water jug. The fountain might be a bit far, so storing enough water is practical.

Raincoat and Spare Clothes: Bring a waterproof raincoat and spare sets of dry clothes for sudden rains.

Warm Clothing: The weather cools down, especially at night and early in the morning. Bring a fleece, jacket, scarf, and beanie. Apply the principle of layering.

First Aid Kit: Basic first aid supplies (band-aids, antiseptic, painkillers, insect bite ointment, etc.).

Region-Specific Recommendations

Hiking Shoes: Opt for waterproof trekking shoes with non-slip soles for Sudüşen Waterfall and other trails. The ground can be slippery.

Backpack: A 20-30 liter backpack for day hikes. You can put water, snacks, a raincoat, and first aid inside.

Thermos: A thermos will be very useful for hot tea or coffee in the morning. A hot drink feels great when it gets cold at night.

Photography Equipment: Bring a high-quality camera or smartphone camera for Erikli's natural beauties, especially the autumn colors and morning mist. If you use a tripod, you can take long-exposure photos.

Books and Games: Plateau camping is generally peaceful and quiet. It's an ideal environment for reading books and playing card games. A chance for true relaxation away from electronic devices.

Trash Bags: Collect your trash to avoid harming nature. There are dumpsters in Erikli, but they are a bit far from the campsite; collecting it in your own bag and throwing it away later is practical.

Safety Tips and Rules

Erikli Plateau is generally a safe camping area, but there are some points to pay attention to.

Wildlife Warnings

Various wild animals live in Erikli Plateau and the surrounding forests. Wild boars, foxes, jackals, martens, hedgehogs, and various rodents can be seen in the region.

Wild Boar: You may encounter wild boars, especially in the evening and at night along the forest edges. Store your food outside your tent in sealed containers or in your car.

If you encounter a wild boar, stay calm, do not shout, avoid sudden movements, and slowly back away. They usually run away themselves when they see you.

Snakes: There are some snake species in the region, most of which are harmless. However, it's good to be careful. Watch your step when walking in tall grass or among rocks.

Insects: Mosquitoes, horseflies, and bees/wasps are active in the summer months. Use insect repellent. Bring antihistamine medication if you have allergies.

There is a risk of ticks, especially in forested areas. Wear long sleeves and tuck your pant legs into your socks. Check your body after camping.

Dogs: There are shepherd dogs in Erikli Village. They are generally harmless but will protect their flocks. Do not approach the animals and do not provoke the dogs.

  • Gendarmerie (Jandarma): 156
  • Forest Fire: 112

The nearest health center is in Yalova city center (25 km). There is also a small clinic in the Termal district. For serious injuries or health issues, you may need to call an ambulance; the travel time to the plateau is 30-45 minutes.

  • Band-aids, sterile gauze, antiseptic
  • Painkillers (Paracetamol, Aspirin)
  • Burn ointment
  • Ointment for insect bites
