İğneada Floodplain Forests Free Camping Guide 2026 - How to Get There, What to Do?

The İğneada Floodplain Forests (Longoz Ormanları) offer a unique experience for camping enthusiasts as one of Turkey's most special natural areas that must be protected. As one of Europe's largest freshwater swamp forests, this floodplain ecosystem is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List and welcomes thousands of nature lovers and bird watchers every year.

Located on the Black Sea coast near the Bulgarian border, this unique geography allows you to experience both forest and beach camping together. With its pristine beaches, rich biodiversity, and peaceful atmosphere, İğneada is an ideal getaway for those looking to escape the stress of city life.

In this guide, I will explain in detail how you can camp for free in the İğneada Floodplain Forests, which areas are the most suitable, and where you can explore. By following nature-friendly camping principles, we share the responsibility of passing this unique ecosystem on to future generations.

Where are the İğneada Floodplain Forests?

İğneada is a town located on the Black Sea coast, within the Demirköy district of Kırklareli province. Situated at the northeasternmost tip of the Thrace region, just a few kilometers from the Bulgarian border, this unique area is one of Turkey's least explored nature paradises.

Location and GPS Coordinates

The GPS coordinates of İğneada are approximately 41.8833° North, 27.9833° East. While the town center is located on the Black Sea coast, the floodplain forests stretch just behind the shoreline, at an elevation of 0-50 meters above sea level.

The floodplain forests cover a total area of 3,000 hectares and consist of two main sections: the Erikli Floodplain Forests and the İğneada Floodplain Forests. Both areas are suitable for camping, but the İğneada side is more popular due to its proximity to the sea.

Simply typing "İğneada Longoz Ormanları Milli Parkı" (İğneada Floodplain Forests National Park) or just "İğneada" into your navigation device is enough. However, forest roads may not always appear on GPS, so pay attention to local signs and directions.

Getting There by Private Vehicle

The journey from Istanbul to İğneada takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. There are two main routes:

1. Route via Edirne (Shorter): Head towards Çorlu on the TEM highway, then turn towards Kırklareli-Edirne. You can reach Demirköy via Pınarhisar, and from there, continue to İğneada. This route is approximately 230 km.

2. Route via Vize (More Scenic): Take the Vize exit from the TEM highway to reach Demirköy and İğneada. This route is slightly longer (250 km) but has less traffic and offers more natural scenery.

For those coming from Edirne, the distance is about 130 km, and the journey takes around 2 hours.

There is a well-paved asphalt road up to Demirköy. The final 30 km stretch from Demirköy to İğneada is also asphalt but narrow and winding. You need to drive carefully, especially in foggy or rainy weather.

Once you enter the town of İğneada, the roads leading to the floodplain forests are a mix of asphalt and stabilized dirt roads. You can reach the camping areas by car, but road conditions in some areas may vary depending on the season.

Getting There by Public Transport

Reaching İğneada by public transport is possible but a bit cumbersome. From Istanbul, you first need to take a bus to Kırklareli or Demirköy.

Many bus companies operate services from the Istanbul Bus Terminal (Esenler) or Alibeyköy to Kırklareli. The journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.

There are hourly minibus (dolmuş) services from Kırklareli to Demirköy. From Demirköy, regular minibuses run to İğneada, with more frequent services during the summer months.

The total travel time by public transport can take up to 5-6 hours. Service schedules are more frequent on weekends and during the summer season.

Alternatively, it is possible to take a private transfer or taxi from Kırklareli to İğneada. Local taxi companies are helpful to tourists in this regard.

Campsite Features and Facilities

There are a few different options for free camping in İğneada. You have the opportunity to camp both inside the forest and by the beach.

Free Camping Spots

Three main camping areas stand out in the İğneada region:

1. Erikli Beach Campsite: The most popular free camping area in İğneada. You can pitch your tent among the pine trees just behind the beach, a few meters from the pristine shores of the Black Sea. The area is wide and flat, with a capacity of about 100 tents.

Waking up just steps away from the sea and falling asleep to the sound of the waves is exactly what you get here. However, due to the unpredictable weather of the Black Sea, a sturdy tent is essential against wind and waves.

The biggest advantage of Erikli Beach is its proximity to both the forest and the sea. You can easily switch between shade and sun as you please.

2. Mert Lake Shore: Mert Lake, a freshwater lake, is located right in the middle of the floodplain forests. You can camp in designated areas along the lake shore. This area is quieter, less crowded, and fully immersed in nature.

You can go bird watching at Mert Lake and watch the morning mist floating over the water in the early hours. It is a critical stopover for migratory birds, especially during the spring and autumn months.

The lakeside camping area has a capacity of about 40-50 tents. The ground can be a bit damp, so a thick sleeping pad is a must.

3. Inside the Floodplain Forest Campsites: You can also camp near designated picnic areas within the forest. The flooded woodland offers a unique atmosphere. Tree roots are submerged in water, and you are surrounded by oak, ash, and linden trees.

This is the coolest and shadiest area, making it a great choice for the summer months. However, mosquitoes and other insects can be more prevalent.

When camping, you must stay in designated areas. The floodplain ecosystem is highly sensitive; pitching a tent in random spots is both prohibited and causes ecological damage.

Water and Toilet Facilities

You need to be a bit more careful about clean drinking water at the İğneada campsites. There are village fountains near Erikli Beach where you can get water. However, if you are unsure about the water quality, it is safer to bring bottled water or use water purification tablets.

Water access is more limited at Mert Lake and the campsites inside the floodplain forest. The nearest water source is in the town of İğneada, about 3-5 km away. Therefore, it is crucial to stock up on enough water.

Toilet facilities in İğneada can be a bit challenging. There are basic WC cabins at Erikli Beach that are open seasonally (June-September), but they may be closed off-season. Hygiene standards are also not very high.

There are no toilets at Mert Lake or in the forest areas. To answer the call of nature, you need to dig a small cathole with a trowel and cover it up afterward. You should also bury your toilet paper. Do not use wet wipes, as they are not biodegradable.

For this reason, it can be useful to bring a portable toilet or at least use a small pop-up toilet tent for your İğneada camping trip.

Fire Rules

Because the İğneada Floodplain Forests are a protected area, there are very strict rules regarding campfires. Lighting a fire inside the forest is absolutely forbidden.

You can only have a controlled fire or barbecue at the Erikli Beach campsite, on the sandy areas, and in designated spots. However, you must do this in a metal fire pit or barbecue grill, elevated from the ground.

Never light a fire near the forest edge or close to trees. The risk of fire is very high during the dry season in July and August.

The safest method for cooking is using a camping stove. Gas canister stoves are both practical and environmentally friendly.

Once your barbecue or stove has completely cooled down, do not dump the ashes into the sea or the forest; instead, put them in a bag and dispose of them in the trash.

Is There Cell Phone Reception?

Cell phone reception in İğneada is generally good. All operators have coverage at Erikli Beach and in the center of İğneada town. Turkcell and Vodafone provide 4G speeds, while Türk Telekom is slightly slower but still usable.

However, the signal can weaken or drop completely at Mert Lake and deep within the floodplain forest. The dense trees in the forest particularly block the signal.

Internet speed is sufficient for social media use and messaging, but it is not ideal for video calls or streaming.

For emergencies, the İğneada Gendarmerie Station has a phone, and there are landlines available in the town.

Best Camping Season and Weather

Because İğneada has a Black Sea climate, it is a rainy and humid region throughout the year. However, certain seasons are more ideal for camping.

Seasonal Recommendations

Spring (April-May-June): The spring months are fantastic for İğneada. In April and May, nature comes alive, the floodplain forests turn lush green, and migratory birds arrive in the region. The weather is mild, with night temperatures around 10-15°C and daytime temperatures around 18-22°C.

In June, the weather starts to warm up, marking the first period you can swim in the sea. Although the Black Sea water is cold, it is bearable at the beginning of summer.

This period is also rainy. The probability of rain is high, so waterproof gear is a must.

Summer (July-August): The summer months are the most popular time in İğneada. The weather is hot (25-30°C), the sea water is warmer (22-24°C), and the days are long. You can enjoy both camping and the sea during this period.

However, the region gets crowded in the summer. Erikli Beach can be packed, especially in August. You may need to arrive early to secure a spot.

Mosquitoes and other insects are more prevalent in the summer. Make sure to have insect repellent and mosquito spray with you.

Autumn (September-October-November): Autumn is a very special time for İğneada. In September, the weather is still warm, and you can still enjoy the sea, but the crowds thin out. In October and November, the floodplain forests take on autumn colors, and the bird migration begins again.

The weather cools down, with night temperatures between 5-10°C. The chance of rain increases, and November, in particular, can be very rainy.

A waterproof tent and a warm sleeping bag are essential for autumn camping.

Winter (December-January-February-March): İğneada is quiet and secluded in the winter. Black Sea storms offer impressive views, but camping is quite challenging. Rain is very frequent, and the wind can be severe.

The sea water is very cold (8-10°C), making swimming impossible. However, for those seeking nature photography, bird watching, and peaceful solitude, a winter camping experience can be unforgettable.

You must be experienced and use four-season gear for winter camping.

Temperature and Precipitation Information

The annual average temperature in İğneada is around 13-14°C. Due to the Black Sea influence, summers are not excessively hot, and winters are not too cold.

The annual precipitation is 800-900 mm, which is above the Turkish average. Rainfall is especially concentrated in the autumn and winter months. Short-term showers can also occur in the summer.

The driest months are July and August, but you should still be prepared for rain.

Wind is an important factor. North and northeast winds coming from the Black Sea can sometimes be severe. You should pitch your tent according to the wind direction and secure it well.

Fog is also a common weather phenomenon. Especially on spring and autumn mornings, the floodplain forests are covered with a layer of mist, creating enchanting landscapes.

Nearby Attractions and Activities

İğneada offers great opportunities not only for camping but also for active nature tourism and exploration.

Hiking Trails

There are several beautiful hiking trails in and around İğneada:

1. Floodplain Forest Hiking Trail (3 km, 1.5 hours): There is a walking trail made of wooden platforms inside the İğneada Floodplain Forests. It is a wonderful route where you can observe submerged tree roots, rich vegetation, and birds within the forest.

The trail is flat and easy, suitable for families and children. Thanks to the wooden platform, your shoes won't get wet.

2. Erikli-İğneada Coastal Walk (8 km, 2.5 hours): You can walk along the coast from Erikli Beach to the town of İğneada. It is ideal for pristine beaches, sea views, and bird watching.

It is a very romantic walk, especially during sunset.

3. Mert Lake Loop (5 km, 2 hours): A hiking route that circles Mert Lake. There are bird-watching towers along the lake shore; if you bring binoculars, you can observe many bird species.

During the spring and autumn migration periods, this route is like heaven for bird watchers.

4. İğneada-Bulgaria Border Line (12 km, 4 hours): A longer and more adventurous route. Stretching from İğneada to the Bulgarian border, this path allows you to experience the wildlife and the atmosphere of the border region.

However, since it is a border zone, be careful not to cross without permission. Keep your passports with you.

Water Activities

Thanks to the sea, lake, and forest waters in İğneada, you can engage in various water activities.

Sea Swimming and Diving: Erikli Beach and the shores of İğneada are ideal for swimming. The clean waters of the Black Sea and the unspoiled nature offer an unforgettable sea experience. The seabed is generally sandy, but it can be rocky in some areas.

For diving enthusiasts, there are interesting underwater formations off the coast of İğneada. However, Black Sea currents can be strong, so it is recommended for experienced divers.

Lakeside Activities: Fishing is possible at Mert Lake. You must comply with local fishing regulations. Rowing and canoeing can also be enjoyable, but you need to bring your own equipment.

Bird Watching: Although not a water activity per se, bird watching by the lake and forest edges is one of the most popular activities in İğneada. Home to more than 250 bird species, the region is a paradise for ornithology enthusiasts.

Pelicans, cormorants, herons, various duck species, and birds of prey can be observed.

Camping Gear Recommendations

Due to İğneada's unpredictable weather and humid climate, gear selection is very important.

Must-Bring Items

Waterproof Tent: The most critical piece of gear for İğneada. Due to sudden rains and high humidity, you must absolutely use a high-quality, waterproof tent. The tent must have a rainfly, and the floor should be made of thick material.

Wind resistance is also important. Black Sea winds can be fierce, so your tent pegs and guy lines must be sturdy.

Warm and Waterproof Sleeping Bag: Night temperatures vary between 5-20°C depending on the season. Bring a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of at least 5°C. Due to the humid climate, a synthetic-fill sleeping bag is more practical than a down-filled one.

Thick Sleeping Pad: A thick, waterproof sleeping pad is essential to prevent moisture and cold from the ground. An inflatable pad is the most comfortable option, but don't forget to bring a spare pump and a repair kit.

Raincoat and Dry Bag: A poncho-style raincoat will come in very handy for sudden downpours. Also, use a dry bag for your electronics and dry clothes.

Camping Stove: Since lighting fires is restricted, a gas canister camping stove is a must. Bring spare gas canisters, as there are no places to buy them in İğneada.

Insect Repellent and Mosquito Spray: Especially in the summer, the floodplain forests are full of mosquitoes and other insects. Use a strong insect repellent containing DEET. Adding a mosquito net to your tent is also beneficial.

Lighting: A headlamp and a flashlight are absolute musts. There is no electricity in İğneada, and it gets very dark at night. Flashlights that can be charged with a power bank are practical.

Water Jug and Water Purification: Bring a water jug with at least a 20-liter capacity. Also, have water purification tablets or a filter with you, as they may be needed, especially when camping inside the forest.

Region-Specific Recommendations

Beach Gear: If you are camping at Erikli Beach, bring swim trunks, a towel, sunscreen, and water shoes. Black Sea waves can sometimes drag stony sand, so protecting your feet is important.

Bird Watching Gear: Bringing binoculars and a bird identification guide will greatly enrich your İğneada experience. 8x42 or 10x50 binoculars are ideal.

Photography Gear: A high-quality camera or smartphone camera is a must for capturing the misty views of the floodplain forests, sunsets on the beach, and birds. If you use a tripod, you can take long-exposure photos.

Trekking Shoes: If you plan to hike in the floodplain forest, waterproof trekking shoes with non-slip soles are essential. The ground can be damp and slippery.

Dry Bag: Use a waterproof bag to protect your valuables, electronic devices, and dry clothes from moisture.

Portable Toilet Gear: Since WC facilities are limited, bringing a foldable portable camping toilet or at least a trowel is useful.

Safety Tips and Rules

İğneada is generally a safe camping area, but there are some things to keep in mind.

Wildlife Warnings

The İğneada Floodplain Forests have rich biodiversity. Mammals such as wild boars, foxes, jackals, martens, and weasels live in the forest. Otters and various frog species can be found in Mert Lake.

Wild Boar Warning: Wild boars are frequently seen in the floodplain forests. They are especially active in the evening and at night. Store your food outside your tent in sealed containers or in your car.

If you encounter a wild boar, stay calm, avoid sudden movements, and slowly back away. Female boars with piglets can be aggressive, so never approach the young.

Snake Warning: There are water snakes and some terrestrial snake species in the region. Most are harmless, but it's best to be careful. Pay attention when walking through tall grass or bushes, and check before lifting stones or logs.

Insects and Ticks: Because the floodplain forests are humid, there is a high risk of mosquitoes, horseflies, and ticks. Wear long sleeves and tuck your pant legs into your socks. Always check your body for ticks after camping.

If you find a tick, pull it straight out with tweezers; do not twist it. If a red ring forms or you develop a fever after a tick bite, consult a doctor.

Sea Warning: Black Sea currents can be strong. Avoid entering the sea, especially in stormy weather. Never swim when the red flag is raised.

It is safer for children and non-swimmers to use a life jacket.

Basic First Aid Supplies:

  • Band-aids, sterile gauze, antiseptic (Betadine)
  • Painkillers (Paracetamol, Ibuprofen)
  • Burn ointment
  • Insect bite ointment (Fenistil)
  • Tick tweezers
  • Antihistamine for allergic reactions
  • Elastic bandage, splint
  • Sterile gloves

Knowing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can be lifesaving in case of a drowning risk in the sea.

Getting Lost: You can lose your way inside the floodplain forest. Always follow the markings at the forest entrance. Save your GPS coordinates beforehand. If you get lost, stay where you are and call for help; do not wander aimlessly.
