Patara Beach Free Camping Guide 2026 - How to Get There & What to Do

As Turkey's longest beach, Patara is a fascinating camping destination with golden sands stretching for 18 kilometers. Located right next to the ancient city of Patara—one of the most important ports of ancient Lycia—this unique beach is also a nesting ground for sea turtles, making it a perfect stop for both history and nature enthusiasts.

Patara is not just about beach camping; it offers an unforgettable experience with the sand dunes stretching behind it, the ruins of the Lycian parliament, and spectacular sunset views. In this guide, you will find all the details about free camping at Patara Beach, from transportation and the best camping spots to places to visit and safety tips.

Where is Patara Beach?

Patara is located within the borders of Gelemiş village in the Kaş district of Antalya. It is situated approximately 200 kilometers from Antalya city center, 45 kilometers from Kaş, and 75 kilometers from Fethiye.

Location and GPS Coordinates

The GPS coordinates for Patara Beach are 36.2635° N, 29.3174° E. These coordinates will take you to the entrance of the ancient city of Patara. From there, you need to walk 1.5 kilometers to reach the beach.

Patara holds the status of both an archaeological site and a Specially Protected Environmental Area. Because it is one of the most important nesting grounds for Caretta caretta sea turtles in the Mediterranean, access to the beach is restricted at night (usually between 20:00 and 08:00) from May to October.

The area is also protected as Patara National Park and has very strict nature conservation rules. Although these rules impose some restrictions on campers, the fact that nature is so well preserved ensures a truly unique camping experience.

Getting There by Private Car

Reaching Patara from Antalya Airport takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. While driving on the D400 highway towards Fethiye-Kaş, you turn right at the Patara/Gelemiş junction. A 5-kilometer asphalt road takes you to Gelemiş village and then to the entrance of the ancient city of Patara.

There is a parking lot at the entrance of the ancient city, which costs around 100-150 TL per day. You can drive up to this point and carry your equipment to the beach. There is a 1.5 km boardwalk leading to the beach, passing through the sand dunes, making for a very pleasant walk.

Some campers prefer to park in the free areas at the village entrance and walk. However, for security reasons, it is safer to use the official parking lot.

Getting There by Public Transport

Getting there by public transport is a bit of a hassle but possible. You can take the buses on the Kaş-Fethiye route from the Antalya or Fethiye bus terminals and get off at the Patara/Gelemiş junction. From there, minibuses (dolmuş) go to Gelemiş village, but the schedule is limited, with only a few trips a day during the summer months.

Coming from Kaş or Fethiye is more practical. Daily minibuses run from both cities to Gelemiş/Patara. It takes about 45 minutes from Kaş and 1 hour from Fethiye. Minibus fares are around 50-80 TL.

Alternatively, you can arrange a private transfer or taxi from Kaş or Fethiye. A taxi from Kaş to Patara is around 400-600 TL, and from Fethiye, it's about 600-800 TL. If you share it as a group, the cost is quite reasonable.

During the summer season, some tourism agencies offer transfer services from Antalya Airport to Patara; you can book these in advance.

Campsite Features and Facilities

Thanks to its expansive coastline, Patara offers comfortable camping opportunities, but there are some important rules to follow.

Free Camping Spots

There are a few options for free camping in Patara:

1. Behind the Sand Dunes: The most popular and legal free camping area is the dune region behind the beach. After following the boardwalk from the ancient city entrance to the beach, you can walk towards the northern side (left) of the beach to find flat areas behind the sand dunes. This spot is both away from the direct noise of the beach and more sheltered from the wind.

2. Right on the Beach (Restricted): It is possible to pitch a tent directly on the sand, but you cannot stay on the beach at night during the sea turtle nesting season (May-October). The beach is cleared at 20:00 in the evening and reopens at 08:00 in the morning. Therefore, beachfront camping is more suitable during the autumn and spring seasons.

3. Around Gelemiş Village: Some villagers offer low-cost camping areas (50-100 TL/night) in their gardens or fields. This area is 3-4 km away from the ancient city, but it provides amenities like water and electricity.

Patara's biggest advantage is its 18 km long coastline. As you walk towards the northern parts, the crowd thins out, and you can find more secluded camping spots. However, carrying equipment to these areas can be exhausting.

Water and Toilet Facilities

Infrastructure is limited in Patara. There are toilets and a water fountain at the entrance of the ancient city, but there is no direct water source on the beach. You need to meet your water needs from the village or the ancient city entrance.

The closest spot to fill your water jugs is the fountains in Gelemiş village. It is recommended to buy bottled water for drinking; there is a small grocery store in the village.

Toilet facilities on the beach are very limited. The toilets at the ancient city entrance get crowded during the summer season. Many campers bring portable toilets or use the ancient city toilets in the morning and evening when the beach is open.

There are no shower facilities on the beach. Bathing in the sea is common, but for a freshwater shower, you can pay for the service at the guesthouses in Gelemiş village (50-100 TL).

Fire Rules

Lighting a fire within the borders of Patara National Park is strictly prohibited. There is dry vegetation among the sand dunes, and the fire risk is very high. Heavy fines are imposed on those who light fires.

Make sure to use a portable camping stove for cooking. Barbecues are also forbidden; any open flame is strictly prohibited.

For lighting in the evenings, you can use flashlights, lanterns, or battery-powered LED lamps. However, during the sea turtle season, using white light on the beach is forbidden; only red light is allowed.

Is There Cell Phone Reception?

Mobile communication is generally problem-free in Patara. Turkcell and Vodafone provide strong signals. Türk Telekom might get weak in some spots, but it is generally usable.

The signal can weaken as you head towards the northern ends of the beach. There are internet cafes and restaurants offering Wi-Fi at the ancient city entrance and in Gelemiş village.

Best Camping Season and Weather

Camping is possible year-round in Patara, but each season offers a different experience.

Seasonal Recommendations

April-June: The most ideal camping period. Temperatures range between 20-28°C, and the sea is warm enough for swimming from late May onwards (19-22°C). Wildflowers are blooming, and the sand dunes are covered with a green blanket. The crowds haven't started yet. However, the nighttime beach ban for sea turtles begins in late May.

July-August: The hottest and most crowded period. Temperatures can soar to 32-40°C, with nights around 26-28°C. The sea is very warm (27-29°C). Sleeping in a tent can become difficult; the cool early morning hours are more comfortable. The beach is very crowded, especially with day-trippers. The beach is cleared at 20:00 at night.

September-October: A perfect period. The sea is still warm (24-27°C), the weather has cooled down (25-32°C), and the crowds have thinned out. In September, you can still see baby turtles making their way to the sea. At the end of October, the turtle season ends, the nighttime beach ban is lifted, and you can stay on the beach 24/7.

November-March: Low season. Rainy days increase, and temperatures drop to 12-20°C. The sea is cold (16-19°C) but still possible for brave swimmers. This period offers a secluded and authentic experience for experienced winter campers. The sunsets are spectacular, and the beach is almost completely empty.

Temperature and Precipitation Info

Patara exhibits a typical Mediterranean climate. The average annual precipitation is 800-900 mm, mostly between November and March. The summer months are completely dry.

The temperature difference between day and night can be 10-14°C during the summer months. The sea breeze provides cool air in the afternoons. A light jacket or sweatshirt is definitely needed in the evenings.

Wind is one of Patara's characteristic features. It generally blows from the southwest and strengthens in the afternoons. Sandstorms can occur, so it is critical to pitch your tent according to the wind direction and secure it firmly.

Nearby Attractions and Activities

There are many historical and natural beauties to explore around Patara.

Hiking Trails

Ancient City of Patara: Right next to your camping area. Dating back to the 5th century BC, it is one of the most important cities of Lycia. The parliament building (considered the world's first democratic parliament), the theater, baths, the main street, and the triumphal arch are must-see spots. The entrance fee is around 200 TL as of 2026.

It is recommended to visit early in the morning or before sunset, as it gets very hot at noon and there is little shade. You can easily spend 2-3 hours inside the ancient city.

Lycian Way - Patara Section: The world-famous Lycian Way passes through Patara. The sections stretching from Patara to Kalkan or Kaş are great for day hikes. The distance between Patara and Kalkan is about 15 km, taking 5-6 hours for experienced hikers.

For a short trial, you can walk from Gelemiş village to the ancient city, seeing sand dunes and Lycian tombs along the way.

Dune Hiking: Walking among the sand dunes behind Patara is a unique experience. It is especially spectacular at sunset when the golden light illuminates the sand. However, it gets very hot in the summer, so prefer early morning or evening hours.

Delikkemer Aqueduct: An ancient aqueduct you can reach with a short walk from Gelemiş village. It's a fantastic spot for photography.

Water Activities

Swimming: The most obvious activity in Patara. You can swim as much as you want along the 18 km beach. The sea is generally calm, and the shallow areas are safe for children too.

Snorkeling: Since Patara is a sandy beach, underwater richness is limited, but there are rocky areas at the southern end where fish diversity is higher.

Canoeing and SUP: In calm weather, you can canoe or paddleboard along the coast. Equipment rental is usually available from facilities in Gelemiş village (100-200 TL per hour).

Windsurfing: The sea breezes that strengthen in the afternoons make Patara ideal for windsurfing. There are a few surf schools in Gelemiş offering equipment rentals and lessons.

Boat Tours: You can explore Kaş, Kalkan, and the surrounding bays with daily boat tours departing from Gelemiş village.

Camping Equipment Recommendations

Special preparation is required for Patara's sandy and windy environment.

Must-Bring Items

Tent and Ground Equipment:

  • Wind-resistant, sturdy tent (geodesic or tunnel types are ideal)
  • Special tent pegs for sand (standard pegs won't hold in the sand)
  • Plenty of extra guy lines and sand anchors (for securing the tent firmly)
  • A well-ventilated tent (it gets very hot inside during the day)
  • Thick camping mat (against the cold coming from the sand)
  • Sleeping bag (5-15°C comfort for summer, 0°C for winter)
  • Thick tarp (for sand and moisture insulation)

Kitchen Equipment:

  • Portable gas stove and spare canisters (at least 2 canisters)
  • Windshield - the stove might not work efficiently due to the wind
  • Large water jug (30-40 liters - the water source is far)
  • Cooler bag and ice packs
  • Pots, pans, and tableware
  • Plenty of trash bags

Personal Equipment:

  • Very high factor sunscreen (SPF 50+)
  • Sunglasses (sand reflection is very intense)
  • Hat or buff
  • Water shoes
  • Strong flashlight or headlamp
  • First aid kit
  • Sand-proof bag/pouch (to protect your belongings)

Region-Specific Recommendations

For Sand and Wind:

  • Extra pegs and ropes (tent securing is critical)
  • Sand anchors or sandbags (for windy days)
  • Waterproof, sand-proof bags (for electronics)
  • Sunshade or tarp (to create shade during the day)
  • Goggles and mask (in case of a sandstorm)

For Sea Turtle Protection:

  • Flashlight with a red filter (white light is forbidden)
  • Dark-colored tent (white tents create light pollution)
  • Biodegradable soap and detergent

Comfort Enhancers:

  • Beach umbrella (shade is a must during the day)
  • Portable solar shower (50-liter capacity is ideal)
  • Large water jug (the distance to carry water is long)
  • Rechargeable fan (for air circulation inside the tent)
  • Snorkel mask
  • Book or e-reader (Patara is great for relaxing)
  • Solar charger (there is no electricity)
  • Hammock stand (there are no trees, bring your own poles)

Safety Tips and Rules

Patara is safe, but there are important points to pay attention to.

Wildlife Warnings

Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta): Patara is the most important turtle nesting area in the Mediterranean. Between May and October, you must follow these rules:

  • Do not use white light on the beach at night (20:00-08:00), only red light
  • Do not approach the nesting areas (marked zones)
  • Do not disturb or follow the turtles
  • Do not interfere with the hatchlings' walk to the sea
  • Do not take flash photography
  • Make sure to collect your trash (plastic is deadly for turtles)
  • If you are not staying on the beach at night (the beach closes at 20:00), pitch your tent behind the sand dunes

Sandstorms: The wind can get stronger in the afternoons in Patara. During a sandstorm:

  • Put on your goggles
  • Stay in your tent and close the doors
  • Secure your equipment so it doesn't blow away

Snakes: There might be snakes among the sand dunes. Do not step into tall grass, and be careful when climbing the dunes.

Mosquitoes: Active in the evening hours. Repellent cream and a tent mosquito net are necessary.

Marine Life: Jellyfish can rarely be seen. Be careful, and apply vinegar in case of a sting.

Sunstroke: There is no shade in Patara, and the sun is very harsh. Drink plenty of water, wear a hat, and frequently seek shade.

Emergency Information

Nearest Healthcare Facility: Gelemiş Health Clinic, for emergency interventions. For serious situations, Kaş State Hospital (45 km) or Fethiye (75 km).

Emergency Phone Numbers:

  • 112 - Ambulance
  • 155 - Police
  • 110 - Fire Department
  • Sea Turtle Research Center: 0242 843 5057 (if you find an injured turtle)

Communication: Cell phones have reception in most parts of the beach. In an emergency, the guesthouses in Gelemiş village are helpful.

Security: Patara is safe, but do not leave your valuables unattended. Do not leave valuables in plain sight inside your car.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Patara Beach free?

The ancient city entrance has a fee (around 200 TL, 2026), which covers both the ancient city and the beach. However, once you enter, you can camp on the beach for free. Some campers reach the beach without paying by using alternative routes from the north (walking through the village), but this is officially prohibited.

Do I need permission to pitch a tent?

Official permission is not required, but there are strict rules since the area is a National Park and a turtle conservation zone. You can camp in designated areas, but pitching a tent in nesting zones is forbidden. The beach is cleared at 20:00 at night (between May and October), and at this time, your tent must be behind the sand dunes.

Where is the nearest grocery store/gas station?

There are small grocery stores in Gelemiş village where you can meet your basic needs, but options are limited and prices are high. For better shopping, stock up before you go in Kaş (45 km) or Fethiye (75 km). The gas station is at the Patara junction, on the D400 highway.

Can I camp with children?

Yes, Patara is great for children. The beach is shallow and wide, and the sea is generally calm. Playing in the sand dunes is fun for kids. Exploring the ancient city is also exciting. However, since there is no shade, be very careful with sun protection. The beach being cleared at 20:00 at night can be challenging with small children.

Can I see the sea turtles?

You can see them between May and October, but following the rules is crucial. Turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs, which is why the beach is closed at night. It is possible to see the hatchlings walking to the sea in the early morning hours (July-September). Absolutely do not use white light or flash, do not interfere, and keep your distance.

Can I camp with a dog?

Since it is a sea turtle conservation area, entering the beach with dogs is restricted. It is completely forbidden in some areas. If you have a dog, it is recommended to consult the National Park authorities beforehand. The camping areas in Gelemiş village may accept dogs.

Can I stay on the beach at night?

Between May and October (turtle season), the beach is closed at night from 20:00 to 08:00. During these hours, your tent must be behind the sand dunes, off the beach. Between November and April, there are no nighttime restrictions, and you can stay on the beach 24/7.

Is it very windy?

Yes, Patara is generally windy in the afternoons. Therefore, a sturdy tent and good securing are very important. The wind is great for windsurfers but can sometimes be challenging for campers. Pitch your tent according to the wind direction and prefer the area behind the sand dunes.
