1. Mount Nemrut

Located in Adıyaman at an altitude of 2,150 meters, Mount Nemrut is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, renowned for the incredible atmosphere its giant statues create at sunrise and sunset. The tomb-sanctuary of King Antiochus, capital of the ancient Commagene Kingdom, is the meeting point of eastern and western civilizations.

The best place to pitch a tent on Nemrut is the plateau just below the summit. From here, you can easily reach both the east and west terraces. Watching the sunset on the west terrace and the sunrise on the east terrace is unforgettable. The night sky is incredible - with zero light pollution, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. The town of Kahta is 65 km away, so basic shopping should be done there. There is no water source on the mountain, so carry plenty of water. Night temperatures can drop to 5-10°C even in summer, making a thick sleeping bag essential.

Best Season: May-September Difficulty: Advanced Facilities: Basic WC near the summit, everything in Kahta

2. Munzur Valley National Park

Located in the Ovacık district of Tunceli, Munzur Valley is one of Turkey's largest national parks. Spanning 42,000 hectares, it is a paradise for hardcore nature campers with its deep canyons, waterfalls, caves, and rich endemic flora. The Munzur River flows right through the middle of the valley, and its pristine water and surrounding greenery are spectacular.

There are many camping spots in Munzur, but the most popular are the entrance to Mercan Valley, around Rabat Waterfall, and near Munzur Waterfall. The hiking trails in the valley are fantastic - some are day hikes, while others require 2-3 days of trekking. Pülümür Valley is also a magnificent alternative. There are basic markets in the town of Ovacık. The region can be sensitive in terms of security, so check the current situation before you go. The wildlife is incredibly rich - you might spot red deer, wild goats, and hawks. All water sources are of drinkable quality.

Best Season: June-September Difficulty: Advanced Facilities: Basic WC at the national park entrance, markets in Ovacık

3. Lake Tortum and Waterfall

Located in the Tortum district of Erzurum, Lake Tortum is a magnificent natural lake, 8 km long and surrounded by high mountains. The Tortum River, which flows out of the lake, plunges from a height of 48 meters to form Tortum Waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Turkey. The surroundings are covered with pine forests and green highland meadows.

You can set up camp at many spots along the shores of Lake Tortum. The most popular areas are around Balıklı Village and the northern shore of the lake. There is also the possibility of camping near the waterfall, but it can be noisy. Trout is abundant in the lake waters, and fishing is allowed. Nearby Georgian-Byzantine ruins like Öşvank Church and İşhan Church are worth visiting. Basic services are available in the town of Tortum. Night temperatures are around 8-12°C even in summer, so a warm sleeping bag is necessary. When it's foggy in the morning, the view over the lake is enchanting.

Weather Conditions: The climate in Eastern Anatolia is extremely continental. It can be 25-30°C during the day and 5-10°C at night. It gets colder at higher altitudes. Sudden weather changes can occur. There is even a chance of snowfall in the high mountains during summer.
